Under the direction of Dr. Frank Evans, Program Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Heart Development and Structural Diseases Branch at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the NHLBI convened a Working Group on Patient-Centered Research in Valvular Heart Disease in July 2019 at the NIH. The working group was chaired by cardiologist Dr. Catherine Otto from the University of Washington, who is recognized internationally as an expert in heart valve disease, Marfan syndrome and other inherited structural heart conditions. Dr. Brian Lindman from Vanderbilt University led efforts to draft what became an open access summary in the April 24, 2020 issue of the Journal of the American Heart Association meant for researchers, clinicians, policymakers, the general public, and patient interest groups.
